AUNDH RESIDENTS, SHOPKEEPERS EXCITED ABOUT SMART CITY DRY RUN

TIMES CITY, PUNE
OCTOBER 08, 2016 PAGE - 4
The excitement among residents and shopkeepers over the Smart City mock drill was palpable on Friday, a day before the event starts. The road test will take place between October 8 and 15.
Doubts and questions aside, the locals are looking forward to the experimental road redesign in their area which promises to provide dedicated space for pedestrians and cyclists, besides allocating
designated spots for hawkers and car parking. The design,
worked out by a city-based architecture firm in association
with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the traffic police is a combination of multiple elements that seek to decongest public spaces and to create an environment for better community living and individual quality of life.
Frustrated with the increasing traffic in the area, residents are hopeful of a weeklong respite from daily struggles of haphazard parking, lack of pedestrian safety and a better quality of community engagement. All, however, are unanimous in the opinion that sound implementation of the concept will be key to its success.

SHUTTLES TO REDUCE CARS, BIKES IN AUNDH

TIMES OF INDIA,  OCTOBER 04, 2016
TIMES CITY, PUNE

Elaborating on the reasons for introducing the shuttle service, city-based architect and town planner Prasanna Desai said, “A lot of people, including housewives, children and the elderly, are forced to remain confined to their homes only because they don’t have a vehicle. There are many others who fear the parking hassles they would face if they drive out in a car to a destination not too far off. This shuttle would be of great use to all of them.Since it is open, clean and will operate at a frequency of every few minutes, we expect it to be the oxygen of the entire experiment as it will reduce the number of private vehicles. We hope the civic body can consider continuing the service even after the experiment.”

Area resident Vaishali Patkar is already confident of its success. “I take autos or taxis even for my local chores and this shuttle will definitely be convenient for me as it promises last mile connectivity all around Aundh. However, I should know the timings of the service well in advance so that I can utilize it well,” she said.

Municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar expresses hope for the system to be replicated all over the city in a phased manner. “What we are trying out is a futuristic model of urban transport. The idea is to get people to walk and cycle, and not think of driving their cars everywhere. However, this is only an experiment, which we will monitor very closely to identify the pros and cons. Successful elements can be tried out in other parts of the city. However, we are not looking at any immediate results,”he said.

MASTER CYCLE PLAN TO COUNTER TRAFFIC ISSUES

TIMES OF INDIA, JULY 24, 2016

SUNDAY TIMES, PAGE - 3

Architect  urban designer Prasanna Desai, who is working for the Pune Cycle Plan, said, “The foremost concern in cycling is the safety part.” There are three layers in the design decision. On the arterial roads, segregated and separate cycle tracks are needed. On roads where speeds are not that high, and roads are slightly narrower, painted tracks can be made and lastly, on narrow lanes, traffic calming measures have to take place. Road widening is not the way for everything," he added.

"Our final report will also give guidelines on the constant monitoring and maintenance of the cycle track network. Our Dutch colleagues point out that changes are not instant, they take time. So the first impact can be seen after 3-5 years. The efforts have to be relentless, consistent with repetitive investment, with cycling awareness programme by the side," he added.

Desai felt that recreation cycling is different, good to spread awareness, but cycle tracks have to serve a purpose to transport people end-to end.

“We have done audits for the city's existing tracks on paper, and have classified them as green, orange and red and henceforth will be looking at what can be improved, what needs to be retrofitted or what needs to be done from scratch,” he said.
